metalwork

our second week workshop was 'applied arts' which consisted of both metalwork and ceramics. prior to the two days we spend in the silversmithing workshop i never really believed that i would consider it as a subject in which i would like to specialise. however, i really enjoyed working in the shop and using the equipment to create a multitude of different effects on plain sheet metal, each outcome as interesting as the last. our brief in the metalwork portion of applied arts was the embellish a plain wooden cube with pieces of different metals inspired by the work of japanese silversmith junko mori. i wanted to incorporate as many of the different techniques as possible. on one side of the cube i used a piece of metal on which i had acid etched the image of a flower. on another i used hammered nails to create a textured surface. i also used different machines to press, roll and weld and solder different pieces of metal and wire. i was pleased with the two days' outcome and believe that the multitude of different pieces of metal achieve an effective aesthetic. whilst i enjoyed the workshop, i concluded that whilst i don't believe that i would choose to specialise in metalwork i am interesting in incorporating elements of what i have learnt into whichever subject pathway i do choose.
